The goal of the K-5 Mathematics Program is to develop students as mathematicians with a strong knowledge about numbers and operations and the ability to apply them in real life situations. The curriculum follows a constructivist model of instruction that builds on a child’s knowledge base to create new conceptual understanding. Investigations in Number, Data, and Space and The Contexts for Learning Mathematics are the main resources used to deliver the Darien Math Curriculum and to implement the Common Core State Standards for Math.

Mathematical concepts are taught in 4 areas of understanding that expand and deepen in each grade:

· Operations & Algebraic Thinking with a focus on the four operations and analyzing patterns.

· Number and Operations with a focus on place value, operations and rational numbers.

· Measurement and Data with a focus on geometric measurement, conversions, representing and interpreting data.

· Geometry with a focus on reasoning with shapes and their attributes.

Children’s Books to Enhance Mathematics

In the article, The Reading Teacher, Allison Hintz and Anthony Smith (University of Washington/Bothell) suggest ways to use children’s literature to explain mathematics and make it vivid for students. The key steps, they say, are (a) choosing a good text, (b) exploring the text in a read-aloud and discussion with students, and (c) extending the text by getting students to explore ideas after the read-aloud is finished.
